March 2010

One of the tough things about living overseas is dealing with the occasional bout of homesickness…

Shot this back in July 2008 when I was in Sydney. Haven’t been back since and after looking at google earth it looks there has been some development there.

Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens Harbour Foreshore Panorama

Around this time I was under the mistaken idea that it was best to shoot panoramas at F22 going for the the biggest depth of field possible. Unfortunately what I didn’t know then is that F22 is optically not the best aperture for shooting panoramas in every situation – doh!

Fisheye lenes have a decent depth of field at bigger apertures like F11 and the result is a cleaner image – F22 on a Nikon 10.5 DX lens can be quite ‘soft’ ….well that’s what I have found anyway.

Also had some problems with this panorama because the light was much stronger in one image as the sun momentarily came out from behind the clouds which made the blend a bit nasty – you can see this on the footpath towards the couple in red.

Could have spent more time agonizing over it in photoshop but mission accomplished – homesickness cured.

Oh and yes it POURED! I only just made it to shelter before it bucketed down.

Gentem Dream Bowl Panorama

by glen on March 22, 2010

The Gentemstick ‘Dream Bowl Session’ on the 14th of March hosted by Niseko Harmony in Hanazono was a sweet event.

It was amazing to see the progression of the event from the first Gentem bowl session I shot in Moiwa on the 17th of Feb 2007. At that event Australia’s gold medalist Torah Bright was in town and threw down – I missed the Mctwist on this hip!

Torah Bright - Gentem Dream Bowl

Cool to think pretty much 3 years to the day she won the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics ! Go Torah !!!

Anyway the 2010 event was a much bigger set up than 2007 in Moiwa with 2 parallel courses lots of hits, bowls and plenty of gentemstick aficionado’s on hand. Great to see collaborations of this kind between local companies putting on events like this.

Shot this panorama at the base – thanks to Gentem and Harmony for letting me shoot the event.
