As a working combination Hop and Taiga were able to synthesize the owners request with stunning results. The first panorama here was taken during construction on the 12th of June 2010 and the second panorama was taken late March 2011 from almost the same position.
Interesting to see the transformation – take a good look at the ceiling.
I loved the wooden structure inside and out and the carpentry is spellbinding.
Seshu is available for private rental and is managed by Holiday Niseko so please contact them if you are interested in renting Seshu next season.
HOP just produced their latest advertising magazine SEIZAN RYUGI which details several recent projects from around Japan including Seshu – nice to see the final product in print.
Finally after lots of preparation Momiji gallery opened last weekend. The opening was a low key affair and we opened from 1 until 7:30 and people dropped in throughout the day.
The gallery is divided into 2 sections, one half has been set up by Australian artist Margo Bartley who is displaying her own water colours and etching’s.
Also included in Margo’s section are 7 Japanese artists exhibiting a wide range of styles from oil paintings to Nihonga to contemporary works using plastics.
In my section of the gallery I’m displaying a range of prints from large panoramic canvas prints stretched over handmade wooden frames to framed archival matte prints shot in and around Niseko Hirafu.
The gallery will be open daily from 1 pm until 5 daily until the village becomes busier later in the month and is located in the middle village between Captain Hitafu and Ezo Seafoods on Momiji street.
Thanks to everyone who came by to take a look and hope to see some new faces soon.
Yesterday with help from a couple friends I finished one big print project. A customer requested a large canvas print based on a pattern from an Ainu Kimono.
Getting the print data was a mission as I couldn’t get enough resolution from scanning an image and had to drive to Shiraoi to visit the Ainu museum called Porotokotan.
I shot the image in 3 sections and then combined them to create the one large image and then made a conversion into black and white. The print was made by a company in Tokyo on an acrylic canvas 900mm wide by 975mm high the ink was really thick – especially the blacks and was very fragile.
My friend and I made the frame which was slightly smaller than the image size and about 1.5 cm thick, we then stretched the print around the frame and stapled it to the back. The end result was pretty cool as the subject was a fabric and then printed on canvas gave it a very life like / 3D look. I found myself almost tricked by the image touching it and expecting a textured feel.
