Seshu – Here and Beyond

by glen on May 14, 2011

Over the last few years i have have been lucky enough to shoot some beautiful houses in the Niseko Hirafu area made by HOP and project managed by Taiga Seshu is the most recent project to be completed and is located in Hirafu’s middle village. Completed in Dec 2010 this custom built house was commissioned by a private owner and is a one of a kind.

As a working combination Hop and Taiga were able to synthesize the owners request with stunning results. The first panorama here was taken during construction on the 12th of June 2010 and the second panorama was taken late March 2011 from almost the same position.

Interesting to see the transformation – take a good look at the ceiling.
I loved the wooden structure inside and out and the carpentry is spellbinding.
だんだんと形作られていくのを目にするのは興味深いものですー天井にご注目ください。内と外に張り巡らされた木目、ハイレベルの建築術に息をのみます。

HOP just produced their latest advertising magazine SEIZAN RYUGI which details several recent projects from around Japan including Seshu – nice to see the final product in print.
「青山流儀」と題されたHOP通信では、HOPが手がけた雪舟を含む全国の最新プロジェクトの詳細が掲載されています。手に取れる印刷物に載る完成品を目にできるのは 嬉しいことです。

Niseko Hirafu Spring Park Virtual Tour

by glen on April 15, 2011

Spring has rolled around for another year and I thought it would be fun to make a 4 spot virtual tour of the Spring Park in Hirafu.

This virtual tour is made from 98 shots so it took a while to put together. Click on the red icons to move around the park and can also zoom in and out with shift/command. Still a few weeks left of good skiing and riding on the mountain.

Besides the Niseko based films shown a special presentation from Aaron Jamieson of Niseko Photography who just recently returned from the disaster zone with Jason McGregor from J Build who together spearheaded a local relief effort delivering much needed supplies to the victims on the main island – here is a link to Aaron’s blog where you can view the short film and photos.

The night was a real success and a lot of money was raised for a good cause.

Self Indulgent Idle Fun

by glen on March 19, 2011

Since our last post here on the studio343 blog the calamity that has befallen Japan, and Tohoku in particular, has taken the wind out of our sails…thinking of what has happened to so many people and also the possibility of what may occur in Fukushima and responding in any meaningful way has been a struggle.

Time to experiment. For a long time I have wanted to try a spherical panorama inside the Hirafu Gondola. There are a few problems to sort out. Usually when shooting panoramas I carefully make sure the tripod set up is level, there is no movement and I calculate or anticipate when movement may occur in the images and shoot with these things in mind. I had to throw out the rule book when shooting this one – movement everywhere on every level.

Happy with the end result but by no means perfect. Here are a few different projections which made me laugh…mission accomplished.

Thanks for reading and lets keep our chins up.

Rhythm Virtual Tour

by glen on February 9, 2011

Last week we finished a Virtual Tour for Rhythm Snow Sports Japan.

Virtual tours are panoramas that are linked within or around a space as opposed to single panoramas. Very happy with the functionality and how quickly the virtual tour loads. To make it easy for viewers to move between and around the different spaces in the shop we placed click-able icons next to the controls.
